'Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me...' It is interesting that David spoke of the valley of the 'shadow' of death. Perhaps he is alluding to the fact that for the Christian, death is but an illusion. Like a shadow, there is no substance to it. You cannot touch a shadow. You cannot grasp a shadow. It is not a figment of the imagination. It is real. But it is ephemeral. It can be banished in a split second by light. So is death for the Christian. However weak we may be when we approach it, however long it may take us to succumb to it, the moment of death itself is fleeting---banished in a second by the light of the Lord. What is our hope? It is the certainty that death is not the end for the believer. It is but a shadow, and when the Christian has to face it, for himself or a loved one, he need 'fear no evil,' because just as Jesus said to Jairus' daughter, 'Talitha koum' (young girl arise), even so he will bid your believing daughter, or granddaughter, or son or grandson to rise. 'Because I live, you shall live also.'
