Christians are to be Christlike in all areas of their lives. Just as Peter called slaves to imitate the suffering Christ, he now appeals to wives to imitate Christ's gentle and lowly character in their marriages. Thus, wives are to be in submission to their husbands, just as Christ submitted to the will of the Father. This, together with a rich pursuit of holiness, is a beauty that cannot go unnoticed even by unbelieving husbands. To the husbands, Peter commands a loving study of their wives that they may listen to and understand them while honoring their wives as cherished and equal children of God. As Christ protects his bride, so husbands must protect their wives, chiefly by prayer. These instructions are applicable beyond the confines of Peter's day and even beyond the bounds of marriage, for we all should pursue Christlikeness no matter what station of life God has us in currently. Let us look to Christ to direct our steps, for we belong to him—he is our bridegroom and we are his bride.
