Genesis 22:1-19 INTRODUCTION: After many days in the land of the Philistines, God again called upon Abraham. This time, the call from God would involve Abraham sacrificially offering up Isaac, the promised and long-awaited son. The faith required for Abraham to believe and trust in God for a son would now be put to the ultimate test. Yet, Abraham believed God would raise that son from the dead (Hebrews 11:19). I. THE PROVING OF THE OFFERING (Genesis 22:1-2) A. God’s Purpose in the Offering (Genesis 22:1a) 1. Most consider the scripture’s use of “temptation” as something most often associated to something sinful. Though this may be the scripture’s most common usage of the word, context always determines the meaning. 2. Undeniably, God tempted Abraham, yet the temptation was NOT intended to bring about sin. In fact, God NEVER tempts man to sin (James 1:13-15). 3. The temptation served as a test of faith in order to bring out the best in Abraham (Hebrews 11:17; 1 Peter 1:6-7). The Devil tempts to bring out the worst. 4. Basically, temptation functions as a means to try one’s faith. James 1:2-3 clearly offers the connection as it incorporates the words temptations and trying interchangeably.
