The darkness that fell across the world as a result of the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden became deeper in the first generation to be born into the world. The confrontation between Cain and Abel marked the first time when false religion rose up against the truth and displayed the viciousness which is always endemic to that which is a departure from the truth of God. The tragedy of Abel's murder should not obscure, however, the fact that Abel did stand for the truth in his time. It cost him his life, but we learn in the New Testament that his example of true faith continues to speak to the world today.
