We are continuing to work through our study in the Book of Acts. We are in chapter 16 where Paul starts his second missionary journey with his new cohort, Silas. Barnabus has now partnered with John Mark and has left on his own adventure in Cyprus.
On this second trip, Paul goes back to the "scene of the crime" in Lystra where he was brutally stoned and left for dead on a dung heap. In Lystra, he meets a young man named Timothy, whom he encourages to go with him. Timothy will be Paul's aspirant for the remainder of Paul's life and ultimately Paul's successor. Paul understood the need for a successor and hand-picked Timothy to take over for him once he was gone.
I believe one of the most important things anyone in ministry can do is to always have someone waiting to take over to continue the work of the ministry. I think so highly of this that I wrote a book on the subject.
