Once & for All (Heb 9) Intro Difference between covenants?
Exposition 1. Service of Earthly Sanctuary (9:1-10) a. Description (v.1-5) b. Service (v.6-7) c. Blessings (v.8-10) Symbolic for present time & purified flesh, but could not perfect conscience. Was only promise of things to come.
2. Service of Heavenly Sanctuary a. Description (v.11) Greater & more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, i.e. not of this creation. Moses told to make tabernacle after pattern that was shown him. Moses' tabernacle was only a copy of the true.
b. Service (v.12) Wasn't with blood of goats & calves, but with Christ's own blood. Is greater sacrifice & even greater because not repeated annually but happens once for all.
c. Blessings (v.13-15) Cleanses not only flesh, but also conscience. Actually redeemed or paid for transgressions under first covenant in order that people may receive inheritance.
3. By analogy, our heavenly inheritance is secured by death of our testator (v.16-22)
Summary (v.23-28) * Just as copies of heavenly things were cleansed with blood of sacrifice, heavenly things themselves had to be cleansed with greater sacrifices * Christ entered heavenly sanctuary, not earthly * He goes in once, not year after year * He has borne our sins once for all & will appear again for salvation.
Application People are being tempted to return to symbolical ritual which can only mean turning away from its fulfillment.
