Israel arrives at Rephidim on their journey between Egypt and Sinai.
They face two challenges: (1) lack of water (vv. 1-7) and (2) war with Amalek (vv. 8-16).
The Lord responds by providing water from the rock (vv. 1-7) and victory over Amalek as Moses raises his hands with the support of Aaron and Hur (vv. 8-16).
Moses responds to these acts of salvation with worship (v. 15). He builds an altar and calls it Jehovah Nissi (The LORD is my Banner).
In Isaiah 11:10 the Messiah is also identified as our banner. In times of turmoil, we rally around Christ, our banner, our Jehovah Nissi.
