Dr Steve Morrison and Larry Wessels of Christian Answers host this series of shows. Islam is not a monolithic religion and consists of differing belief systems. Program #5 in this presentation series discusses the much more mystical sect of Islam known as the Sufis. Strict Islamic Law and the five pillars of Islam are like a "schoolmaster" that Sufis say is fine for others, but they have gone beyond the need for it. Instead, Sufis follow books that other Muslims do not. Sufis believe in al-Khidr/Khadir (the Green) who is an immortal being whom Sufis believe can renew his youth. The Khadir can kill people and still be blameless. Some Sufi leaders have claimed that the al-Khidr has personally taught them. The key belief of Sufism is that believers can be "one with God," thus a Sufi who is "one with God" can be considered Allah himself. The Sufi lives for today and considers seeking after God to be similar to friendship, wine, being drunk, and unlawful sex. Sufis believe in stages (maqamat) in life such as absorption and annihilation of self into the divine. Maulana Jala-uddin Rumi is one of the popular Sufi authors and founder of the Mevleviye/Maulawiya Order.
