Jesus – being God and knowing His plan and purpose yet – wept upon hearing of the death of Lazarus. Christ demonstrates His very humanity in this genuine outpouring of grief and sorrow for a dear friend. The Lord understood better than any that the death of Lazarus was a consequence of Adam's fall and sin in the world. Death is one of the enemies of Christ that will be subdued in the fullness of time. In seeing the effects of death touch the home of Lazarus, Jesus also weeps out of a sense of indignation and righteous anger. The Lord had a redemptive purpose in the healing of Lazarus to show Himself forth as the proven redeemer of His people, and He will call all of His own forth as with Lazarus in the last day.
