There is a connection between the Kingship of Christ and His death.
We must remember that Adam was God's first appointed steward King upon the Earth. Adam, however disobeyed God and brought ruin upon all creation. There was a need for a last Adam to arise to serve as the Father's vice-regent but this last Adam could not serve as Vice-regent without setting aright all that the first Adam had broken in and by His disobedience. That disobedience had to be undone and the only way it could be undone was by paying the penalty of sin of the first vice-regent. Christ comes to do the will of the Father as a suffering Servant who is also King of Kings and Lord of Lords. As the suffering servant He comes and is always about the will of the Father.
The will of the Father is that without the shedding of blood there is no undoing of the Fall and no reinvesting man as His regent over creation. So in the death of Christ the first Adam's sin is atoned for and the Last Adam is invested with the Kingship that was squandered by the first Adam.
Christ could not have been the God-Man Mediatorial King ruling from Mt. Zion if He had not paid the penalty for the prior King and kept all the law perfectly that the first King failed in keeping.
So, just as the death of Christ was instrumental unto the work of Christ as our great High Priest so the death of Christ was instrumental unto His Work as our High King.
