Paul completes his treatment of Christ's pre-eminence in the first creation with two simple but staggering statements of absolute truth concerning Christ.
The first has to do with his eternal existence: 'he is before all things.' He is pre-existent, he never was non-existent, possessing the unchanging being of divinity.
The second has to do with his sustaining power. All things hold together in Christ: he holds all things that exist together, and holds together all things that exist, sustaining them in existence as well as in form and order, by the word of his power.
From this we should learn to see Christ in all of his creation; we should bow before him as the mighty God; we should consider what it means for the new heaven and the new earth, for the blessing of the saints as well as the torments of the lost; and, we should remember that this great God is our Redeemer, upon whom we can entirely and fearlessly rely.
