H.C. Questions 65-67 – Word and Sacrament Point to Christ – Sermon Outline
Intro: We receive Christ by faith, faith that is itself a gift of God from Christ and the Holy Spirit, who works faith into our hearts, giving us Spiritual eyes to see and receive Christ, through the Gospel and sacraments.
Need: The Gospel in particular, and all the Scriptures more generally, reveal salvation through Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross, and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper are visible confirmations and illustrations, seals and signs, of what Christ has done for us, to assure/increase our faith.
Theme: The Gospel and Sacraments show that our salvation is through Christ's one sacrifice.
1. The Holy Spirit gives faith and strengthens faith through preaching and sacraments.
2. The sacraments display and confirm our forgiveness and eternal life through Christ's sacrificial death.
3. Word and Sacrament thus focus our faith on Jesus Christ and Him crucified for us. |
