Acts 12:1-17 – Persecution vs. Prayer – Sermon Outline
Intro: A new Herod renews church persecution some ten years after Saul's persecutions, having the Apostle James the brother of John put to death with the sword, and imprisoning Peter to be put on trial after Passover. Need: The Christians do not wilt under persecution, but pray constantly and fervently to the Lord, who delivers Peter by an angel, reminding us that we must pray at all times with true faith that God will deliver us from evil. Theme: Earthly rulers can kill the body, but the Ruler of Heaven protects us as we pray to Him.
1. Herod's harming the Church pleases the Jews and entices him to arrest Peter during Passover. (1-4) 2. The Church prays to God for Peter, and God answers by sending an angel to rescue Peter. (5-10) 3. Peter realizes God's power will protect the Church, which he declares to those praying for him. (11-17)
