Remember this letter was written to Christians who were doubting their relationship with God because of the heresy coming from the Gnostics. The Gospel of John was designed to convince people to believe in Jesus Christ (John 20:30,31). The Epistle of John was written to people who had already believed in Christ but were struggling with doubts. The gospel was for evangelism; this epistle was for encouragement. This last paragraph in John's letter gives believers assurance in three areas:
I. God Wants You To Have Confidence About Your Eternal Life. (5:13)
II. God Wants You To Have Confidence In Your Prayer Requests. (5:14-17)
III. God Wants You To Have Confidence In Your Spiritual Standing. (18-21)
