Paul reminds the Corinthian believers that many of them were not of noble birth, wealth, or wisdom by worldly standards when God called them. They need to remember who they were and still are. He emphasizes that God chooses what the world considers weak, foolish, and insignificant to shame the wise and powerful. God chooses the 'are nots' and cancels out the 'things that are'. The salvation of God in Christ baffles the human experience. This demonstrates that human boasting is futile and that all glory belongs to God. Christ was our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption when we were foolish, wicked, profane, and debt-riddled. In Him, these things are our possession. Our only boast should be in the Lord, not in human achievements or status or works. |
