Previously, we examined the verses that follow this passage of Scripture. Tonight, our message is directed to those who sense their need of a Saviour and are being drawn to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The first thing we notice is Christ's invitation to 'come'. No one is too young, too old, or too sinful; the only requirement is a willingness to come. To come to Christ means to acknowledge Him as Saviour, surrendering to Him and entrusting our lives into His care. We gladly submit ourselves to and identify with Jesus Christ.
However, we are reminded that discipleship comes with a cost. We must deny ourselves in every aspect—our sinful nature, our self-righteousness, and our selfish pursuits of pleasure. Additionally, we must take up our cross, being willing to endure the reproach that can come with being a follower of Christ.
Verse 25 puts everything into perspective: if we are willing to bear the cost of discipleship in this life, we gain eternal life in the world to come.
