Almost no one really believes in eternal punishment anymore, including professing Christians. But the Bible is very clear about this matter, and it is a total contradiction to all truth and reason to believe that the wicked will simply go to sleep and cease to exist after all the damage they have done with their sin. That is the hope and faith of the infidel and the ungodly, but they will find out they are wrong as they are drawing their last breath. They will not simply be "separated" from God and the righteous, because that would suit them just fine, since they hate God and the righteous. There is a Lake of Fire where those who refuse to repent and believe the Word of God will be punished for eternity.
