Even his name shows the contrast. 'Jonah' means 'dove', a bird associated with senseless activity. 'Son of Amittai' means 'son of faithfulness', a term that reminds us of God's reliability and support. The story shows that God punishes wicked societies, something that should not surprise us when we think of our own reaction to evil And Nineveh was notorious in its day. It also shows that God chastises his own people when they turn to evil, as Jonah did when he disobeyed God and wanted to keep God's blessing from others. Above all, it shows how God delights in mercy. Jonah found mercy when he repented and was given success in his work. Nineveh found mercy when the king and his people believed the message, showed their sorrow for sin, and gave up their wicked ways. It reminds us of St. Paul when he called himself chief of sinners. Who may not find mercy?! And Jonah found mercy again when he was angry at God for showing mercy. What a contrast between bird-brain Jonah and our faithful God! Has this been our experience? Discovering our sin, and God's Fatherly welcome of the penitent? Who will pray for our country? If Mary Queen of Scots feared the prayers of John Knox more than the entire army - who will plead for him to appear in his glory again? Think about Christ Jesus. God in human nature bore our sins in his body on the tree. Who can say God will not have them? or that he has abandoned his people? So, 'Return to me and I will return to you.'
