As we go back to Hebrews after considering the pictures of cleanness and uncleanness in Leviticus 10 and 11, we have the means to interpret them reinforced - they are the shadows of the good things to come. In the New Covenant, we are no longer dealing with shadows since the time of reformation. They were not the image of the very things, but just shadows. In the New Covenant, our ability to understand is much greater because we have the image and not just shadows. A shadow expresses truth about a thing, but all of the detail and precision is completely lacking. Since the coming of Christ, we don't have His crucifixion in front of us, but we have the image of that crucifixion. Because their shadows had no power, they had to be repeated year after year because they couldn't make anyone spiritually clean. Instead, the sacrifices were to be a reminder of their sins and their being unclean as the high priest went into the presence of God on the Day of Atonement, they had a duty to recognize that they needed something greater, because the blood of bulls and goats couldn't take away sin. We need to make sure we recognize that Christ was the sacrifice to take away sin and not just to forgive us of that sin.
