Having considered the great illustration of Yahweh's pursuing love for his wayward people seen in Hosea's marriage to his wayward wife Gomer, we see in the second major section of his book (chapters 4-14), the following themes: I. Yahweh's burning anger against his people for their spiritual adultery. II. Yet his steadfast love for them moves him to compassion and restoring love. III. Yahweh's call to them to return in repentance to him. We ourselves are not exempt from these indictments, for we are like Gomer and like ancient adulterous Israel. To decisively deal with this problem God sent his Son to bear the just punishment we sinners merit and through him also to apply Christ's righteousness to our spiritually bankrupt lives. God's steadfast love and saving purpose are the fountain and foundation of our salvation.
