In many ways, the doctrine of creation is the most important doctrine we confess. “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.”
After all, think about what happens if you take ‘Maker of heaven and earth’ out of the Creed? “I believe in God the Father Almighty” – What does that mean? Quite frankly, that could mean anything! What is meant by “god”? “father”? “almighty”?
If God is not the “maker of heaven and earth” – then “god” is probably a construct that we have imagined – and “father” just means that we have projected human fatherhood on our deity – and “almighty” means that we think of him as really powerful.
But if he is not “maker of heaven and earth” then he may or may not be relevant to daily life – because a god who is not the creator may or may not have any power over the universe.
And most obviously if God is not maker of heaven and earth, then whatever did make heaven and earth is more powerful than he is – since it probably made him too!
And if you just believe that the universe has always been there – then you believe the universe is the ‘maker of heaven and earth’ – the Almighty – that brings forth all things.
If you will not “Remember your Creator” – then you will worship something else instead of him.
That’s why it’s not surprising that when the Preacher comes down to the end, when the Preacher wants to say “here’s what really matters” – he says, “Remember your Creator”....
