History is more than an academic exercise. It has to do with edification. Dr. Frank James of RTS categorizies history as a subcategory of providence – the story of how God acts through primary and secondary causes through out history to accomplish His purposes.
1. Babylon - teaches us to humble ourselves in the sight of God lest we become captured in the very same sin of pride.
2. Assyria - teaches us that God will come in judgment, regardless of whether or not people believe it. He will judge the ungodly but will eternally vindicate and redeem His people.
3. Philistia - teaches us that our trust is in the Lord, not in any thing else. We do not need to fear what others fear, bc our Lord Jesus Christ is our mediator.
Conclusion - God's perspective on history supplies direct benefit to believers. We do well to learn from history so as to know how to act in our own lives. This is very hard to learn. When God puts a difficult trial in our paths, the first thing we must do is to acknowledge that this is of God, then figure out some way to deal with it.
