By the early 20th Century, Liberal theology had taken hold of many mainline protestant churches. However, this rising threat was not completely free to wreak havoc on the church. The first challenge came from the fundamentalist movement with the publication of "The Fundamentals", a collection of essays that challenged prevailing threats to orthodoxy including liberalism. However, the movement had brought about some unforeseen consequences that have stigmatized the "evangelical" movement. Yet, one faithful man named J. Gresham Machen stood as a 20th Century day reformer, bringing to light the error that that liberal church had wrought and exposed that they were really not Christian at all.
