Daniel is very affected by the visions. The language used is the same as how Nebuchadnezzar is affected when he sees one like the Son of Man in the fiery furnace, only Daniel adds grief to the response. He went to ask one of those before the throne to understand what he saw. While it is easy to get caught up in the details, we should remember that the most important thing to take away from the vision is the angel's summary. The angel summarized the vision as four kingdoms will arise out of the earth, but the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and possess it forever.
Just as the fourth beast is the hardest for us to understand, it was also hardest for Daniel, so he asked the angel about the fourth beast. The angel described the fourth kingdom as being different from the other three which shall devour the whole earth including attacking the saints of God. But at the appropriate time, God will judge and the greatness of all the kingdoms of the earth will be given to the saints. Daniel's response was to continue to be grieved. Obviously, not about the saints inheriting the kingdom, but the sorrow and misery until then. Do we have the same heart to grieve over the misery in this world because of people's rebellion to God?
