The spiritual blessings which God gave to his church on the day of Pentecost, will forever be marked by believers as one of the greatest revivals of all time. The events which unfolded during that period in the city of Jerusalem cannot be explained apart from God. This was not something that the apostles had manufactured by themselves; not something that came as a result of an elaborate church programme; not something that was produced by human endeavour or effort – rather it was in every part a sovereign and supernatural work of God. That truth is underscored by the phrase in v. 2 “there came a sound from heaven.” This was not something that the apostles worked up- it was something that came down. It was not what they had given to God – but what God had granted to them. In his own sovereign purposes and in fulfilment of his own glorious promise God had poured out his Spirit in power. It is no exaggeration to speak of this as the greatest revival the world has ever known! This time of spiritual blessing was to influence the ministry of the church and the evangelising of the world right to this very day….
