Having spent my past several messages on defending marriage, I decided to spend two more weeks talking about parents and children. Many parents are desperately looking for the formula which provides the key to successfully raising our children. Many books and seminars promise to teach parents the secret to success. Sadly, some of these are legalistic (going beyond Scripture) and unbiblically deterministic (promising results if the formula is followed).
What the Bible actually teaches about parenting is pretty simple. Discipline them, instruct them and don't provoke them to anger (Eph. 6:4). Every family has to work out how they will implement these basic instructions.
What does the Bible teach about why kids turn out as they do? Does good parenting guarantee good kids? How do we explain why some kids from Christian homes turn out well and others rebel? How can we bring the gospel into our parenting?
