Today on the Youth Apologetics Training podcast we'll be talking about slavery in the New Testament. As we continue this series concerning slavery in the Bible it's important to remember that kidnaping people was strictly forbidden in the Old Testament as well as in the New.
Exo 21:16 And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
As we look into the scriptures in the New Testament about slavery you will find that the practice of slavery is not denounced outright. What you find is a subtle undermining of the concept of slavery that was intended to change the hearts of believers and ultimately change the society. History shows that God's word was successful in changing societies and moving believers away from the practice of slavery.
1 Timothy 1:9-10 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, (10) For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
Slaves obey your masters? Is this verse encouraging slavery?
Ephesians 6:5-8 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; (6) Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; (7) With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: (8) Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man |
