Purpose: to invite all listeners to serve with joy the one true God and worship Him with gratitude
Introduction: The psalm is also from book four of the psalms (90-106), directing the reader's attention away from earthly kings and kingdoms (i.e. David and Israel) to God's sovereign dominion, the One who accomplishes His eternal purpose. The hymn "All People That On Earth Do Dwell" (aka "The Old Hundredth") [written by William Kethe (a translator of the Geneva Bible) in 1561] is based on this psalm.
