Continuing in the series “The Interactions of Christ,” we find a lawyer—not someone who is what we commonly think of as a lawyer, but an expert in the Jewish law. He came testing Jesus and yet was tested. He gave the right answer, and yet scripture tells us that “he wanted to justify himself.” With such an expert in these matters (and even bringing the right answers!) not being justified, what little chance do we have in these important matters of our soul? The answer is in the parable of the Good Samaritan. It’s there we learn the true multi-faceted nature of the law—not as a means to justify ourselves but to see God’s high standard, to point us to Christ, and finally—as a rule of life for the believer.
