Consider Napoleon, who conquered much of Europe in his time. How many people can name 3 of his battles? How about 2? Most of us only know Waterloo, where he met his demise at the hand of the Duke of Wellington, and most of you can’t remember the Duke’s real name. In the moment when that happened it seemed a most glorious and splendid accomplishment – the Bible says that is like the flowers of the field.
We could go to any cememtary and find the biggest stone in the place – and most of you wouldn’t know a thing about the man or woman over whom that monument was erected.
We glory in victory, in athletic achievement, in historic moments. But these things all fade away.
