In James 3:1-12 we are shown two uses - one posititve and one negative - for our tongues: 1)Use your tiny yet powerful tongue to make great proclamations, and 2)Don't use your tiny yet powerful tongue to destroy. We see from James 3:5b-12 that our tongue is dangerous and destructive - Its character: The focal point of the world's unrighteousness (v. 6a); its influence: Staining the entire body & destroying one's life (v. 6b); its allegiance: Satan (v. 6c). Human beings can tame every beast in creation but cannot tame the tongue because it is a restless evil and because it is full of deadly poison. We who claim authentic faith should not have an inconsistent, double-minded tongue!
