As Paul begins to instruct the Colossians how to live this life of Christ, he starts with five vices to put to death. These vices are characteristic of sexual sins and move from the external deeds to the internal heart of the matter. Ultimately, the root of this sin--as with any sin--is covetousness, which, surprisingly, can be labeled idolatry.
We are to kill such sin by specifically naming it for what it is and killing it; by starving it; by feeding on the good. We must remember who we are in Christ so that we do not entertain such sin. And we must see sin from God's perspective by looking at the cross.
