Recently my computer froze and would no longer respond to my commands. I should have known I was headed for problems because there were tell-tale signs that something was not right. Programs took longer to load. I was met by the 'spinning wheel of death' on occasion. I learned how to restart my Mac in 'safe mode' which loaded a fresh copy of the operating system and disabled third-party extensions and log-in programs. My Mac worked perfectly in 'safe mode'. I was then able to find the errant, problem code, eliminate it, and now my Mac is working again. Now this rather 'geeky' introduction provides the perfect analogy to understand the dynamics of Christian living. When we trust in Christ for salvation, God installs within us a new operating system-- the Spirit of God! But He does not remove the old-- the flesh. Thus it is possible for us to operate either under the control of the Spirit or the flesh. But how do we know which operating system is in control? Well, there are tell-tale signs for each. When operating under the 'flesh', the deeds of the flesh will be evident; and under the Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit will be displayed. What are the deeds of the flesh? Paul gives a partial list that focuses on the sins that troubled the Galatians. The sins fall into four categories: sexual, religious, social, and pagan. It's important for us to label 'sin' as sin so that we can properly repent of it if we are to learn to walk in the Spirit. And it's important because there are serious consequences for those who habitually and continual operate in the flesh: They will not inherit the kingdom of God. So, what are the tell-tale signs of the flesh?
