God's work is to be open to all, but unbelievers should never be given a position or feel too comfortable when under conviction. Nehemiah had to leave Jerusalem to return to the king. Upon his return he found out what had taken place in his absence. Eliashib, the priest, prepared a great chamber in the house of God for the enemy of God, Tobiah.
When Nehemiah returned, he understood the evil and removed Tobiah and his belongings from the house of God. He thus "cleansed the chamber." Nehemiah then contended with these men because they had forsaken the house of God although they were present in body.
