In this first message in a series on the book of James, we consider his counsel: 'Count it all joy when you fall intovarious trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.'
This is so foreign to the thinking of many American Christians today that it sounds something like: 'Rejoice if you fall into a vat of boiling oil, because the oil will burn off some of your unsightly blemishes.' Frankly, I am not so concerned about my skin blemishes that I would desire to have them removed through so painful a process. And I suspect that many of us would say, if we were being utterly truthful, 'I am not so concerned to develop patience that I would welcome trials as a means to do so---and I certainly wouldn't REJOICE in the trials.' Should it not be clear to us that God values patience in us much more than some of us do! If you or someone you love is in the midst of a trial right now, you may find this message encouraging and edifying.
