The cross is always offensive isn't it? To the Jew the cross is the curse of God and how could the Messiah be under the curse of God? To the Gentile, the cross is foolishness because how could the Savior and Lord over all creation be crucified? Nevertheless the cross of Jesus Christ is the decisive remedy for our fundamental human problem of estrangement from God because what Jesus did there redeems us from everything that separates us from our Creator, and His finished work on our behalf can only be applied to our hearts by faith, completely apart from any works by us. This is why it is insane to suggest that we could do anything to add to the perfect, finished, and sufficient work of Christ for us. He lived for us. He died for us. He was raised for us. How dare we then turn to the cross of Christ and say, "Thank you Jesus but now let me add a little of my own obedience to Your work, and then I'll be saved." I know we don't verbalize it like that but friends way too many professing Christian's think like that.
