Some evangelicals seem only focused on Syria prophetically (an alleged future Damascus doomsday they misinterpret from Isaiah 17) while others seem only focused on Syria politically. But these focuses miss God's heart in OT history and prophecy for the Syrian people, from the days of Genesis to the days of Jesus and beyond. The Word of God has much to say about God's care of refugees, widows, and orphans in general, and this country in particular. Syria has one of the worst refugee crises in decades and one of the greatest opportunities for Christian witness if we keep our focus on what Christ called His disciples to whenever they asked Him about signs of the end times or the future of Israel.
God prophesies blessing for Syria in Genesis 12, displays His grace to war victims in the land of Syria in chapter 14, has brought a Syrian from Damascus into the family of faith by chapter 15, brings more into His family in chapter 24, and calls Israel to remember the Syrian connection of their ancestry in Deuteronomy and to show grace to aliens and refugees from there and other lands in God's Law. The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah spoke of grace to come for people in the land of modern Syria, and some in their day received it (Elijah with Naaman the Syrian and a Syrian widow in Sidon). Jesus gave grace to a Syrian woman and healed many Syrians and preached good news to them. Saul was converted in Syria near Damascus and many churches were planted there. The name "Christian" was first used in these lands, and it became a stronghold and launching pad for Christianity for centuries, fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis 12:3 and Isaiah 17:3 and others.
