There can be little doubt that the fountain opened for sin and uncleanness in Zech 13:1 refers to the work of our Lord Jesus dying for the sins of His people. But who were the idols that He would cause not to be remembered in the following verses? Had not Israel fully given up their idolatry after the captivity? An idol can be anything or any person you trust for deliverance. Once the genuine article had appeared in history, the counterfeits followed. So Jesus warned His disciples (Matt 24:24) that false christs would rise up after him, and that His disciples were not to believe them. Nor did true believers believe them and in fact roughed up these false prophets so that they confessed they were not true prophets but mere farmers and shepherds. Indeed, true to Zechariah's words, the names of these "idols" have been forever forgotten.
