The Corinthians have demonstrated a willingness to change their status, to the point of abstaining from intimacy within marriage, dissolving a marriage, or departing from an unbelieving spouse, if that is what God desired for them. Although their commitment was admirable, Paul addressed the mindset that conversion to Christ should result in an immediate change in one's outward circumstances. Three times in this section, Paul says something like: "Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called." In other words, were you called to Christ while working in a grocery store? Then be the best stock person, the most efficient cashier, or the most diligent produce manager you can be. Look for opportunities to express the love that Christ has put in your heart for your fellow-workers. Be prompt, honest, courteous, trustworthy, ready to fill-in for a sick employee. Don't complain. Don't gossip. Don't pilfer. Treat both those above you and those below you as you would want to be treated. Don't assume that God wants you somewhere else now that you are a Christian. God knew where you worked when He saved you. Paul is not saying, "You must for your entire time on earth remain in the same situation you were in when God called you." But he IS saying, "Don't think that because you are now a Christian, you should necessarily change your job, leave your home, etc." Are you a baby Christian? Then bloom where God has planted you.
