When our Lord declares that the Son of Man must be lifted up (implying death on a cross), His critics object that the Messiah should abide forever. They understand from the Old Testament that the Messiah would have a kingdom that would know no end. Yet they do not understand, again from the Old Testament, that the Messiah would also suffer and die. Their preconceived notions about the Son of Man do not fit what the Son of Man, Himself was stating about Himself.
We must always let the Scriptures speak to us and let the Scriptures explain Scripture. We must be be careful not to force our own opinions into our interpretation of God's Word.
The Son of Man is a title signifying Christ's pre-existence, His Humility, and the necessity for us to accept Him for Who He is: the Savior. There is a day coming when the Son of Man will return as the Judge.
