As we continue to study the Song of Solomon two thoughts continually confront us. First, how deep and intense the love of Solomon is for the Shulamite. Second, How often he needs to tell her he loves her. There are practical lessons here, of course, for our marriages, but there are also profound lessons in Christ’s love for us. In 4:9 the message is profound but simple—one look of faith to our Saviour captivates his heart, stirs his emotions and motivates his actions.
Christ’s Heart is Ravished For His People The heart of Jesus is moved for his people and motivated for them. We have not got an indifferent Saviour. He is not cold concerning our circumstances, or our human frame and weakness. Here we get a sense of the emotion of the Christ’s love—it is heart-stirring love. Isaiah tells us that he is satisfied in seeing the souls His people saved (Isaiah 53:10-12). Hebrews 12:2 tells us that in Heaven Christ will have Joy (delight) that we are with him. But here is an emotion that is not a past or future, but present—his heart is ravished for us. In giving Himself for us (Titus 2:14) He obligated Himself to the exercise of our faith (Isaiah 45:22)—He is captivated when we look to Him.
Christ’s Heart is Ravished By the Look of Faith We can look back into eternity and say that Christ was moved in the eternal decrees of God to die for a people—“while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” But this verse highlights the power of the look of faith in Christ bride. The use of the Hebrew word theme here is causative—she causes him to be captivated, to be stirred up, ravished and excited towards her by one glance of her eyes.
