Idea: The Mystyery of God's Sovereignty in Suffering Intro: During Vacation Bible School we used basketball to communicate spiritual truths. The Bible often uses sports to communicate certain ideas, most often the analogy of a race. Several aspects of Hezekiah's illness and prayer in Isaiah 38 remind me of the race that is set before us, the race of the Christian life. We have a goal, a yearning for a finish line that we know God brings us to as "more than conquerors." But along the way, we face many hazards and trials. The historical narratives of the Bible often describe these hazards, along with God's sovereign love in the midst of the race, coupled with teaching that trains us to be more and more like Jesus as we press on to the finish line. Hez's illness and response are such a passage. It sets before us a real life situation that we can identify with, and teaching that will comfort us as we run the race that is set before us. It gives us the occasion to consider some of the mystery of God's sovereignty over suffering.
