There is no doubt Abraham was a believer but like every person he struggled with the old nature. God had changed his name from Abram to Abraham, but after God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah Abraham left the land again and found himself doing the same things that got him in trouble earlier in his life. Even though his name had changed, there was still a bunch of Abram still left in Abraham! Indeed, before God would finally give him the child of promise, the LORD needed to remind Abraham he was no longer Abram. Indeed, the old nature of Abram never fully goes away and when you get under pressure it is very often the default mode that you go to when circumstances arise to draw it out!
