"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." Exodus 20:15 (NKJV) Love for God demands that we imitate His truthfulness. And love for our neighbor demands that we guard others' reputations against what is harmfully said, or even harmfully not said. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." We all know that one, right? And we all know it's utterly false: malicious words of gossip and slander can hurt us, or harm others, profoundly. The 9th commandment is the cornerstone for law courts throughout human history. Foundational to any community is reliability in its justice system. Still today, witnesses are asked to "swear to tell the truth, the whole truth," because justice depends upon truthfulness. However, God's prohibition against bearing false witness has profound implications for the way we reflect Him and what it means to love others. Join us Sunday as we continue our study of the 10 Commandments, "Law of Love and Liberty."
