Scripture teaches what people are to believe concerning God. But what does it mean to study God?
Studying God is an impossible study. "Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?" (Job 11:7). In the depth of his being God is past finding out.
Studying God is an inescapable study. God reveals himself everywhere. And everyone studies God (Rom. 1:19). As a result of their study everyone believes something about God. R.C. Sproul was right: everyone's a theologian! What you believe can ultimately not be contained in a creed although we believe creeds are essential and unavoidable. What you believe is ultimately what you think about God. And everyone thinks something about God.
Studying God is a fruitful study. The study of God humbles our hearts. Spurgeon said, "Other subjects we can compass and grapple with; in them we feel a kind of self-content, and go our way with the thought, 'Behold I am wise.' But when we come to this master-science [we find] that our plumb-line cannot sound its depth, and that our eagle eye cannot see its height." Studying God reminds us that "We were born yesterday, and know nothing… our days on earth are a shadow" (Job 8:9). The Study of God expands our mind. Spurgeon also said, "He who often thinks of God, will have a larger mind that the man who simply plods around this narrow globe. The study of God comforts our souls. To study God rightly is to find that he is exactly what we need but seldom seek. We take cheer when our thoughts of God overwhelm our troubles (John 16:33).
