Athens was a glorious city of architecture, but Paul views it as a vast gospel opportunity.
Provoked by the idolatry in the city, Paul starts to reason with the people in the synagogue and marketplace. After encountering various philosophers, Paul launches into one of the greatest sermons ever preached providing a far more glorious world view.
Paul appeals to the conscience and explains who God is, explaining His majesty, power and might. A different view of man is presented, as one who is accountable to his Creator.
God is portrayed as being knowable, and Paul sets forth the reality of the day of judgment, calling on the people to repent of their idolatry. The response is hostile, and Paul is shut down. Do we understand who God is, and are our minds open to our Creator?
