6.3 The civil law, or judicial law, is still absolutely binding, inasmuch as it has become wisdom by which we govern our social lives.
Claim--We discover the will of God for our day in age through the careful consideration of general equity principles in the civil laws.
Consideration 1--it is not always easy to distinguish between the moral and the civil law, or even a ceremonial law for that matter.
Consideration 2--The Westminster Confession of Faith makes this distinction (XIX, 4). It lays out the principle of "general equity" by which one applies the law to the contemporary situation.
Argument 1--At the first giving of the law, the distinction between the laws written on stone (Exodus 20a) and the laws written on a scroll (Exodus 20b-23) seems to be intended to communicate the situational nature of the civil law.
Argument 2--The Apostles understood the principle behind a given civil law as representing the will of God for all time.
Response 1--How is this distinct from Theonomy?
Response 2--Are we in sin if we do not implement these laws?
