The healing of the leper in Matthew 8 is a classic picture of Christ's kindness and tenderness towards lost souls.
Leprosy is a disease that disfigures, damages and destroys the body, and sin has a similar effect on our lives. We are shaped by sin, with our spiritual senses ruined, and sin will ultimately bring us to an early grave.
Leprosy had no human cure, and in the same way, only Christ can cleanse us from our wrongdoing. In sympathy and compassion, Christ touches the leper. It was a touch containing great power and virtue, and a symbol of Christ identifying with an outcast of society.
Christ is willing and ready to identify with the sinner. He was made sin for us that we might find forgiveness and peace.
