The Scribes had the constant occupation of doing two things… 1st they sought to fine tune the commands of God into little minut applications. 2nd they sought to take all commands and find one great unifying principle. Our Lord condemned the first pursuit… he called that manipulation of the law the production of man's traditions. But the second pursuit he honored… that pursuit to find the single unifying principle in all that God commands… And so when the scribe came to him in Mark 12 and asked him what was the chief command Christ was ready with a response… It is to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength… and he added that this love for God would be evident in ones love of others as themselves. The Scribe is ecstatic. Beautifully said teacher… this is the whole of the law… this is better than the sacrifices… Our Lord's answer is both encouraging and also a warning… He says “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” Now let me just say… that is not something you want to hear at the judgment seat of Christ! You came close to the Kingdom. Not far is too far when we are talking about getting into the Kingdom. What is left out to bring us all the way into the Kingdom? Let's go further into the story…
