Because Jesus is the Good Shepherd, we need to be His sheep! Sacrifice: Jesus lays down his life for the sheep (11b) (Ex 3:14; Ps 100:3; Ezek 34:4, 10-11; Zech 11:17; Ezek 34:23-24) Penal Substitution: 1 Jn 3:16; Is 53:4; Mk 10:45; Acts 20:28; Gal 3:13; Eph 1:7; 1 Cor 5:7b; 2 Cor 5:21) The hireling cares nothing for the sheep [12-13]) Mutual knowledge: Jesus and His sheep know each other (14) He knows His sheep (14a) (Eph 1:4; Rom 8:29; 2 Tim 2:19) His sheep know Him (14b) (Jn 9:38) Analogy: The Father's relationship with the Son (15a) (Jn 17:21; Matt 11:27) Sacrifice: Jesus lays down His life for the sheep (15b) Applications: Unbelievers: We need to become His sheep—a work that only God can do! Believers: We need to worship Jesus as our perfect Sacrifice. We need to know Jesus more fully—”that I may know Him” (Phil 3:10)
